LAST week, Café Prestige in Windhoek was packed to the rafters with guests who came to bear witness to the launch of the exhibition ‘Home of Mine’, which concluded the three-week long Reframe Photography Workshop, facilitated by Julia Runge, Lisa Ossenbrink, and Hildegard Titus.

During the launch, Ossenbrink related how much work went into preparing the workshop, which went smoothly thanks to the hard work of those who joined.

Fourteen participants were tasked to create a photo series under the theme of ‘Home of Mine’, which they could interpret in both abstract and literal ways. Their work ranged from capturing youth culture, safe spaces, identity and economic freedom in Windhoek and its surroundings.

Elago Akwaake, Esther Kambonde, Janet Mwatongwe, Laimi Pauvaneko Hawala, Martha Mukaiwa, Natache Sylvia Iilonga, Olivia Nghaamwa, Profiliu IM Nandjebo, Rachel Sakeus, Saara Iita, Sheugnei Cloete, Shili Munyama, Steven de Beer and Victor Shivolo all received certificates for their work.

The photography on display included portraits, landscapes, local markets, street views and other subjects, with each photographer capturing something personally meaningful.

Mukaiwa titled her series ‘Salon’, which was made up of five black and white photos depicting scenes in a typical hair salon.

Mukaiwa described her work as “an intimate snapshot of black women’s hair salons as an idiosyncratic and dynamic safe space for black women and girls” which often serve as a break from the harsh realities of life.

The images are calming and tell a thousand stories all at once.

The exhibition will be on display until 20 January in Windhoek, before being displayed at the Fotogalerie Friedrichshain in Berlin towards the end of 2023.
