THE Namibian Police at Ndiyona settlement in the Kavango East region are investigating the death of an off-duty officer who was run over by a truck in the early hours of last week Friday.

Constable Laurentius Haingura (39) worked at the Ndiyona Police Station as a shift supervisor.

The truck driver, Maybin Chonka (39) from Chililabombwe in the Copperbelt of Zambia, was arrested after reporting the accident at the Divundu police checkpoint, about 80km from the scene of the accident.

He has been denied bail after making his first court appearance in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Monday and his case was postponed to 7 December 2022 for further police investigations.

According to the police, the deceased allegedly appeared mentally unstable hours before the accident.

The accident occurred on Friday morning at about 04h50 at Ndiyona settlement along the Trans-Caprivi highway.

“The driver failed to stop the vehicle after the accident and failed to render any assistance to the injured person,” says the police report.

It is alleged the deceased reported for nightshift duty on Thursday, 20 October 2022, at around 21h45. After the shift change, he allegedly took out his service pistol from the charge office safe, went outside and shot two rounds into the air, indicates the report.
