Unam considers conditional admission – The Namibian

THE University of Namibia (UNAM) has introduced conditional admissions to cater for AS level pupils with lower points.

The university will consider first-year students for new curriculum degree programmes, with Unam’s standard admission criteria.

Unam spokesperson Simon Namesho told Desert Radio on Wednesday that applicants who obtained 25 or 26 points with at least two Namibia Senior Secondary Advanced Subsidiary (NSSCAS), or higher level subjects with a minimum E symbol and minimum Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate Ordinary NSSCO English C symbol will be considered for tertiary studies.

“They will be admitted on condition that they upgrade their school results in specific subjects to meet the normal admission criteria within the 2023 academic year, while being enrolled conditionally as first-year students,” he said.

The university registrar’s office confirmed this.

Unam also requires prospective students to pass their first-year subjects.

The office of the registrar said if these conditions are not met, students will not be registered for the 2024 academic year.

Another conditional entry requirement is that applicants need to have obtained at least 27 points with at least two AS or higher level subjects with a minimum E symbol.

“In addition to the above, conditional admission will be considered for first-year students into the new bachelor’s degree of education in secondary education degree programmes,” Namesho said.

Applicants who have obtained 28 or 29 points with at least two AS/higher level subjects with a minimum E symbol and minimum NSSCO English C symbol, and who are meeting all the programme-specific school subject grade requirements will also be admitted.

“They will be admitted on condition that they upgrade their school results in order to meet the normal admission criteria within the 2023 academic year, while being enrolled conditionally as first-year students,” a statement released by the university said.

Unam said no conditional admission will be considered for old curriculum programmes or new curriculum diploma programmes.

Namesho said no late registrations will be allowed this year.

“This year Unam will not have late registrations, so everyone has to register within the provided period. First-year registrations started on 16 January and will end on 31 January, while senior students’ registration started on the same day and will end on 14 February,” he said.
