Swapo denies contravening own constitution

SWAPO has denied violating its own constitution during its election for candidates for the positions of party vice president, secretary general and deputy secretary general.

Swapo lawyers Murorua Kurtz Kasper Inc, on Tuesday said the party’s election process was constitutionally and administratively fair.

“Swapo is constrained not to accede to comrade Ekandjo’s complaint as framed,” the lawyers said in a letter on Tuesday.

Pohamba Shifeta, Jerry Ekandjo, Frans Kapofi and Tom Alweendo were nominated to contest elections which took place in Windhoek to choose candidates for the position of party vice president.

Hage Geingob is the party president.

Ekandjo and Alweendo failed to make the cut while Shifeta and Kapofi prevailed. However, Kapofi withdrew from the race.

Following Kapofi’s withdrawal from the race, Ekandjo insisted that his name be added to the list of Swapo vice presidential hopefuls.

Ekandjo’s lawyer Richard Metcalfe said Ekandjo received enough votes to replace Kapofi on the list for the position of vice president.

Metcalfe also said that Ekandjo has not been duly eliminated during election and continues to suffer severe prejudice.

Ekandjo’s lawyer gave Swapo until 12h30 last Friday to respond to his request.

“Failure to receive a timeous response will unfortunately result in the institution of litigation,” Metcalfe said.

Last week Ekandjo threatened to challenge his exclusion from the candidate list in the High Court.
