Shikongo orders closure of shebeens causing ‘havoc’

NAMIBIAN Police inspector general Joseph Shikongo on Friday urged police officers to close all illegal shebeens causing havoc at Keetmanshoop.

Shikongo said this during a community meeting held with residents of the town, aimed at closing crime fighting gaps between the police and the community.

The police highlighted drug abuse, theft, house breaking, stock theft and assault caused by the abuse of alcohol and unemployment as major concerns.

During the meeting, community members expressed dismay with shebeens operating in residential areas surrounding homes, schools and churches.

Residents complained that the shebeens operate from early in the morning until late at night, causing noise pollution and disorder, and depriving school pupils of quality study time.

Shikongo said it is a standing operational matter that if a shebeen is operating illegally, the police are duty-bound to close it as a matter of urgency.

After the meeting, young people at the town agreed to form Youth Against Crime, to support the police in crime prevention, while Shikongo emphasised the duties and responsibilities of the police.
