Russian tourists robbed at gun point


A Russian couple and their guide were robbed at gunpoint at the Bird Island Dunes Mall at Walvis Bay on Monday.

This is one of a few recent attacks on tourists at the coastal town.

Others include out of motor vehicle theft during broad daylight.

According to the Erongo community affairs unit commander inspector Ileni Shapumba, the incident happened on Monday, 16 January at about 12h20.

The three allegedly drove to the island to take photos when their car got stuck in the dunes about 100 metres from the main road.

While attempting to push the car, a silver Polo with five male occupants pulled over to assist.

“Two of the robbers pulled out firearms and pointed at the tourists and ordered them to surrender all their properties. Out of fear, the tourists surrendered everything as ordered,” said Shapumba.

The robbers got away with US$12 000, N$16 000-00, two iPhone 13, One iPhone 14, Credit cards, two Nikon cameras, passports and other national documents.

They also took along the vehicle’s keys, leaving the victims stranded.

The tourists and their guide were later assisted by a police vehicle that passed along the main road.

The Russian tourists left the next day after obtaining emergency travel documents.
