RFA identifies over 70 road sections for tolling

THE Road Fund Administration (RFA) has identified over 70 road sections across the country for tolling, but only 23 are viable for setting up tollgates, RFA chief executive officer Ali Ipinge has said.

The sections were identified in a feasibility study that was conducted two years ago, which Ipinge said indicated that tolling is feasible on the Namibian roads.

“We have done a thorough study and about 70 possible toll sections, out of those, 23 sections of the road are viable to do tolling. The other sections will increase traffic, one can look at them five to seven years from now. But at least 23 sections we can already do now,” he said.

Ipinge told The Namibian on Monday that tolling some sections of the national roads, including in urban areas, will enable the RFA to fund the maintenance of the roads.

“If we implement it, we will be able to at least generate an additional a third of where we are now,” Ipinge said.

Currently, RFA generates over N$2,7 billion from road user charges and tolling would generate between N$500 million and N$700 million per year.

While awaiting cabinet decision, RFA will launch a nationwide public engagement to sensitise road users about tolling.

“In the next three to four months, we are going to do nationwide stakeholder engagements around tolling. So, by the time the decision is made, at least the road users and the community will appreciate where we are coming from with the tolling agenda,” he said.
