‘Please don’t kill me’ … … slain woman allegedly begs husband for her life

THE Dordabis woman who was allegedly shot dead by her husband on Saturday begged him to spare her life moments before being killed, one of her daughters says.

Mother of 10 Meggie Rooi (56) was shot dead by her estranged husband (56), along with one of the couple’s daughters, Goldie Landsberg (30).

The shooting, which saw two other people injured, took place on Saturday at Farm Stinkwater, a settlement near Dordabis, south-east of Windhoek.

Khomas police spokesperson warrant officer Silas Shipandeni on Saturday evening confirmed the incident.

Those who were injured in the shooting have been identified as Willem Cloete, who was shot four times, and Silvia Kotze, who was shot once.

The suspect had allegedly believed his estranged wife was having an affair with Cloete.

DAUGHTER HOLDS MOM’S HAND BEFORE KILLING

The Namibian yesterday visited Rooi’s house, where some of her remaining nine children sat huddled together.

Stajane Rooi (25) who was with her mother when her father allegedly shot her, said it all happened so fast.

Stajane said she and her mother were holding hands while her father aimed the gun at them.

She said her father first went to her grandmother’s house, where Meggie and her children were staying after Meggie separated from him.

He initially picked up an axe and aimed it in the direction of her sister, who ran away.

“It is after my sister ran that he took out the gun and he shot her infront of the house. He then shot Willem four times. As he was shooting them, he said he had been waiting for this day.

“My mother and I ran to the house next door to look for help.

“We were holding hands while running, and then my mother said I should go ahead and run.

“I did, but then I heard gunshots. When I turned around, he was shooting at my mother and I could not run any further.

“He then came to me, slapped me, and told me I was next. From there I was numb.

“I cant explain what came over me. I am not sure why he didn’t shoot me,” Stajane said.

According to Rooi’s son Edward Landsberg (32), his mother’s last words were: “I will do anything for you, please don’t kill me.”

Landsberg said he was too far from his mother to help.

“I would have done anything to save my mother’s life. She did not deserve to die like that.”

ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP

Rooi’s daughters yesterday said they grew up in an abusive home.

Demitrice Rooi (22), who was in Windhoek at the time of the shooting, said her father has always been abusive.

“For as long as I can remember he abused my mother. She endured that abuse, and as we were growing up we would ask her why she doesn’t leave him. She would tell us she is staying because of us,” she said.

“When she realised the abuse is affecting us, she finally moved out, and we came to stay here at my grandmother’s house.

“This is all so unreal. I don’t know what to feel for my father after what he did,” Demitrice said.

Meanwhile, a police source who wants to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal, said this was not the first shooting incident involving the couple.

“The deceased was arrested in 2019 for shooting the suspect. He was beating her that day, so she grabbed a gun, but did not know how to discharge it, so he grabbed the gun.

“As they were struggling the gun went off, and he was shot in the leg. We confiscated the gun and the deceased was arrested, but the suspect withdrew the case a few days later, and she was released.

“We, however, kept the gun, so I don’t know how he got hold of the gun now,” the source said.

‘I AM FINISHING’

The suspect’s brother, Lazarus Awaseb, who is a reverend at Stinkwater, yesterday said before the suspect allegedly shot and killed his estranged wife and daughter and injured two other individuals, he told him: “I am finishing.”

Awaseb yesterday said Meggie and the suspect have been separated for the past three years.

“My brother is an aggressive man. We as a family and church have in the past spoken to them to get back together. They would try, and after a few weeks they would be separated again.

“So we told him to accept it and move on, but when he is under the influence, he would want her back and became abusive towards her.

“So he told me before he went to shoot them he would come back to finish me and my wife, as we didn’t want to save his marriage.

“He came to my house on Saturday and started shooting. Luckly I ran away and my wife was not home.”

Meggie is survived by nine childen, 10 grandchildren, three siblings, and her father.

Shipandeni yesterday confirmed that the suspect was arrested on Saturday and is expected to appear in court today.
