Ongandjera king warns against alcohol abuse, GBV

ONGANDJERA king Johannes Mupiya has warned the community of Ongandjera against alcohol abuse and sexual- and gender-based violence (GBV).

Mupiya was speaking at a community meeting at Pyamukuu village in the Omusati region recently.

He said there are many shebeens in the community, which sees people consume excessive alcohol and become abusive towards their partners.

He said those who abuse alcohol and end up being abusive should be reported to the village heads or senior traditional councillors.

Mupiya said when cases of abuse are reported to senior traditional councillors, they are then referred to the relevant offices.

“The report should be factual. It must not be false accusations. If your neighbour abuses his wife, report it to the senior traditional councillor.”

“We have laws in place. We have the police and the traditional authority. All these offices can address those issues,” he said.

He warned men against perpetrating GBV, saying that rape and killing are crimes that can lead to arrest.

“If your relationship with your girlfriend is not working, let her go. Don’t stab, shoot or attack her with a panga. If you do that, you will put yourself in trouble. You will go to prison, while your family will pay for your action.

“Who will kill you when you kill another person’s daughter? We need to think before we act,” he said.

He said elders should council their children not to be abusive and commit murder.

THEFT

Mupiya said theft is on the increase at Ongandjera, particularly stock and chicken theft, and some are involved in stealing other people’s mahangu from stores.

“Don’t take other people’s animals. I want order in this community. I don’t want people fighting each other or neighbours not talking to each other.”

He said he he has been informed that some headmen fight over portions of land and warned them to desist from this.
