NamTv takes platform to the street

THE local online television, NamTv hosted its first show on Saturday themed ‘Amp’d Vol 1’, which saw different underground local and international artists showcasing their talents live to a large crowd.

The event was hosted at Tall Trees in Windhoek North.

NamTv strives to give local artists a platform to amplify their voices through its YouTube channel.

“After hosting our shows through YouTube, this time around we decided to literally take the word amplify and bring it to an actual stage,” said the founder of NamTv, Roger Gabohumise.

He said the name Amp’d is shortened from ‘amplified’.

“We know how hard it is for underground artists to be booked at shows. So, we aim to host events like this at least three times a year. We’re starting with Amp’d vol 1, hoping two and three will follow next year,” he said.

NamTv was founded in 2014 to promote local underground artists in Namibia through videos on YouTube to prepare them for corporate and mainstream levels.

According to Gabohumise, since 2014 they did about 360 videos for underground artists.

“We saw a few of them make it to the mainstream level like the late ABlock Cuzzel, KP Illest, K’Chinga and Lioness,” he said. He added that they also have a show that plays on One Africa TV called ‘NamRequest’, where they go into the streets of Namibia and ask local people to request their favourite music videos to be aired on One Africa.

“With all these platforms that NamTv has created, we decided it’s best also to start with event organising because we work with many youths across Namibia and also want to give them that platform where they can perform in front of 500+ people.”
