Kapofi fraud suspect says he feels unsafe

“I HAVE been receiving calls, and I don’t feel safe.”

Owen Mahoto, the man suspected of defrauding minister of defence and veterans affairs Frans Kapofi, yesterday told The Namibian he lives in fear.

Mahoto is wanted by the police for the disappearance of N$200 000 from the minister’s Standard Bank Namibia account two weeks ago.

The minister opened a fraud case at the Windhoek Police Station after being scammed by someone pretending to phone from the bank, offering to “assist” him with his accounts.

The case is currently with the police’s Commercial Crime Investigations Unit.

Mahoto yesterday said he has been trying to get answers from the bank on why they deactivated his account.

“Since the beginning, I have been telling the bank to sort out these things, and all they keep telling me is that their internal investigations are ongoing. They haven’t even called me in for questioning,” he said.

Mahoto said he has no access to his bank accounts.

He said he has been receiving phone calls, but did not say from whom.

CONSULTING LAWYERS

Mahoto said he was scheduled to have a meeting at a police station to iron out the matter yesterday, but this did not happen since he first wanted to consult a lawyer.

“I have no access to my personal and business account. I have nothing, and I am stuck. The police have scheduled a meeting tomorrow [today]. I have met with my lawyer to regain access to my accounts,” he said.

Mahoto, however, would not reveal who represents him legally.

“But the bank needs to answer a lot of questions,” he said.

Standard Bank Namibia spokesperson Magreth Mengo yesterday did not respond to questions by the time of going to print.
