Futsal League title race wide open

THE Express Credit Futsal League reached the halfway stage after matches over the weekend, with the Men’s Premier League title race still wide open.

Patriots went to the top of the log for the first time, while Chile Futsal, the X Men and Windhoek Futsal Club are all breathing down their neck, after picking up valuable points over the weekend.

It was, however, a disastrous weekend for the early log leaders Santastico, who lost all three their matches to drop down to fifth position on the log. According to league administrator Absai Simon, injuries and a congested fixture list contributed to their downfall.

“Santastico asked if they could postpone their matches the previous weekend, but that meant that they had to play three matches within 24 hours this weekend, which contributed to their downfall. They were also missing three of their top players through injury, namely goalie James Tom, Talbot Mtombeni and George Hummel Junior, the son of legendary Brave Warriors defender George Hummel,” he said.

On Saturday evening, Santastico lost 5-2 to Premier League newcomers Windhoek Futsal Club, while they suffered two more 4-1 defeats against Patriots and Ballers the next day.

That saw them dropping down the log to fifth position on 18 points from nine matches, while four teams overtook them on the standings, with Patriots going top on 24 points from nine matches.

Chile Futsal Club moved into second place on 22 points from 10 matches after winning two of their three matches over the weekend.

On Saturday they beat Galacticos 5-4, and lost 2-1 to The Mavericks, while they thrashed SBS Trucking 9-1 the next day.

Former league winners the X Men moved up to third place on 21 points from 10 matches, after winning all three their matches.

On Saturday, they beat Quality Futsal Club 6-1, while they thumped Windhoek Show Society (WSS) 10-2 and beat Galacticos 4-2 on Sunday.

Following their 5-2 victory against Santastico on Saturday, Windhoek Futsal Club beat Quality FC 4-3 the next day to move up to fourth position on 19 points from eight matches, and with matches in hand on the leaders they are well-placed to make an impact in the second round.

In other Premier League matches over the weekend, Quality FC and WSS drew 4-4, Selecao picked up two victories against Replica (5-4), and SBS Trucking (7-2), while they drew 2-2 against Ballers; Replica beat The Mavericks 4-1; and SBS Trucking beat Replica 3-2.

The Men’s First Division is also still wide open with both Group A and Group B being keenly contested.

In Group A, City Stars FC and 7kings FC continue to set the pace after they both recorded wins over the weekend.

City Stars beat Kamuvare FC 12-4, while 7kings FC beat Octagon 8-7 and now both top the log on 15 points from five matches, although 7kings FC have the better goal aggregate.

Three teams are tied at the top of Group B on 12 points each, namely Demia FC, Flying V and Minerals FC, with Flying V on top with the best goal aggregate.
