Former Kavango councillor stays in custody after shooting incident

A former regional councillor of the Nkurenkuru constituency in the Kavango West region, Damian Nakambare, is staying in custody after appearing in court on Tuesday for allegedly shooting his nephew.

Nakambare (47) was arrested on Sunday, after he had allegedly shot his 42-year-old nephew in the abdomen with a 9mm pistol at Mayara, a village in Kavango West.

The shooting happened after Nakambare’s nephew allegedly refused to hand over the keys of a vehicle he had been given for a transport business. The shooting reportedly occurred in the presence of police officers.

Nakambare has been charged with attempted murder, negligent handling of a firearm and discharging a firearm in a public place.

With Nakambare’s appearance in the periodic court at Kahenge, magistrate Barry Mufana postponed his case to 8 November for further investigations to be done.

The magistrate directed that Nakambare should be held in custody in the meantime.

Public prosecutor Godfry Shivolo represented the state.

The injured man is currently in a critical but stable condition in Nankudu District Hospital.
