Five arrested for allegedly robbing Chinese national at Oshikango

POLICE at Oshikango in the Ohangwena region have arrested five suspects who attacked and robbed a female Chinese businessperson.

The incident happened at Epic Hotel at the border town on Friday afternoon.

The victim reportedly came from Rundu to buy stock at the town on Thursday.

According to a Ohangwena police officer, sergeant Simeon Haufiku, someone might have seen her shopping around and targeted her.

Haufiku said N$63 527 was stolen from the victim but it was later fully recovered.

“The five suspects pounced upon the victim, He Mei, all armed with knives. They grabbed her handbag, which contained the cash and slashed her vehicle tyres before fleeing the scene. Police were, however, swift on their tails as while the suspects were speeding out of the hotel premises, a police vehicle that was on the same road noticed it, and thought it suspicious and chased after them. All the suspects were arrested at the town before they could get away or even touch the money,” confirmed Haufiku.

The five suspects, whose names cannot be revealed at this stage, are set to appear in the Ohangwena Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Namibian Police chief of communications deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi noted that there is a perception that Chinese national keep large sums of cash on them or their properties. However, they are not the only targets for criminals and robberies.

“Everyone is a target and people need to take care and be cautious at all times, especially when handling money. Thieves are desperate and they would do anything to get their hands on anything that can make them money. Sometimes people close to us are the ones who tip off these thieves. We need to be vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police,” warned Shikwambi.
