Fire destroys shop, three flats at Walvis

A FIRE destroyed a shop and three flats at Narraville, Walvis Bay, yesterday morning.

The fire started at about 01h05 in Mermaid Street at Oasis Supermarket.

According to Erongo police unit commander for community affairs inspector Ileni Shapumba, it is suspected that the fire started at the back of the shop, where blocks of flats are also located.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

There were no people in the shop at the time of the fire.

No injury or loss of life was recorded, but the building has been damaged.

A shop employee, who preferred to remain anonymous, yesterday said: “It is really sad. We were supposed to be at work, but it is impossible now. I live nearby and saw the flames. I quickly ran to wake up my colleagues who were staying in the flats.

“I am just glad they are safe. We are not supposed to speak to anybody at the moment, because nobody knows what happed yet.

“I am not sure where my employer can be reached at the moment as his phone is off. They are busy assessing the situation for the moment.”

Meanwhile also in the Erongo region at Swakopmund, the police are investigating separate incidents of three people found dead yesterday morning in homes at Mondesa, Swakopmund.

A fourth person is in hospital, in the intensive care unit.

Erongo police regional commander for community affairs inspector Ileni Shapumba confirmed that two men and a woman died.

“The one is a 17-year-old man, while the other two are yet to be identified,” he said.

Shapumba said the incidents are not linked to the rumour of drug-infused brownies making the rounds at Swakopmund, but it has not been dismissed either.

Police investigations into the matter continue.
