Blessings keep flowing for taxi driver who returned N$8 000

NICO Sibolile, who touched many Namibian hearts when he returned the N$8 000 in cash that a customer forgot in his taxi, received N$20 100 on Friday as a reward for his honesty.

Sibolile received the money from Vaino Muvale, who started a GoFundMe campaign with his friends.

According to Muvale, Sibolile did a special thing and a very impressive act, which society needs to emulate.

“I came up with this initiative to promote good citizenship and to cultivate a culture of ubuntu within our society that appears to be getting broken day by day,” Muvale said.

He collected the funds from his network of friends and small and medium enterprises over a period of about a month.

Sibolile said that he is grateful to all the people that have shown gratitude for what he did.

“This is something I did not expect because I was doing something anyone would have done. I had a lot of people reaching out to me to appreciate what I did,” said Sibolile, who is no longer driving a taxi.

He said he started his new job at Ark Trading at the beginning of the month, and he is still adjusting to the new work environment.

“I am happy with everyone’s contribution, through my deed I did not do it trying to get something out [of it], I was doing what I thought was right,” Sibolile said.

Sibolile was dropping a pensioner off at a service station. She forgot her handbag containing N$8 000 in his taxi.

When Sibolile found the bag, he returned it to the owner. He said he was not tempted to take the money for himself, and his first thought was to return the bag to its owner.

After the story broke, many people reached out to Sibolile to reward him for his integrity, including cash rewards and a job offer at Ark Trading, where he has been working as a driver since 1 December.

The bag belonged to Katrina Aboas who was going to buy a coffin for a child she raised.

Sibolile also received N$2 560 from members of the public over the weekend at the offices of the Windhoek City Police.

He previously also received a donation of N$8 000.
