B2Gold trains students on managing environment

B2GOLD Namibia’s environmental department held its fourth B2Gold Otjikoto Summer School (Boss) in December under the theme ‘Landscape Function Analysis’.

According to a statement on the Vancouver-based company’s website, the programme is designed to equip final-year university students with environmental monitoring skills and also offers them valuable mining industry experience through exposure to practical studies in environmental management and rehabilitation monitoring at B2Gold’s Otjikoto mining operations.

The mine is situated in the northern central part of Namibia, approximately 300km north of Windhoek, and is the largest gold producer in the country.

The statement says the programme is facilitated by staff members within the environmental department and supported by guest speakers from other departments on topics such as the role of geologists, surveyors and geo-technicians in the operations of a mine, job hunting and interview skills, as well as mental health and wellness.

“The collected data is a valuable output of the programme as it contributes to the operation’s rehabilitation monitoring data set and aids in decision-making for the site’s rehabilitation approaches,” it reads.

The programme will also help to build the capacity of the company’s own staff and university students.

According to the statement, the summer school has to date trained 41 participants from the country’s two main universities.

“Participants receive certificates and reference letters upon completion of the programme,” the company says.
